Missing teeth can be replaced in many ways – one option is to replace them with Dentures. Dentures are false teeth which are fitted snugly over the gums to replace the missing teeth and restore function and improve your smile – they can be removed and placed as necessary.
There are different types of dentures; partial or complete and acrylic or metal. Visiting your dentist for an assessment will help you to choose the one most suited to you – this will often depend on the number and condition of the teeth you have remaining.
Dentures are a great way of replacing multiple teeth and by using the right lab we are able to get these false teeth looking just like your natural teeth. Dentures require skill and experience – if not made the right way they may be uncomfortable, bulky and unsightly.
If you are looking at getting dentures and have never worn them before, they may take some time to adapt to. For this reason, it is important they are fitting the mouth well so that this adaptation period runs smoothly and is not prolonged.
Why choose dentures?
Dentures don’t involve any surgery and often require no/little work on your remaining teeth. They can be placed when out socialising or eating and can then be removed and cleaned at night when sleeping.
They are good as a long-term measure for those wanting to avoid options such as implants/bridges or where these may not be an option. In addition, they can be used as an interim prior to carrying out those treatments.
They can improve confidence and self-esteem dramatically by allowing you to speak clearly, eat comfortably and smile proudly. They also help to support your lips and cheeks which may be sinking in due to missing teeth and this can often help to give a more youthful appearance to your face.
Dentures can also be used as an interim whilst awaiting the placement of implants/bridge to fill any spaces.
How long do dentures take to make?
In some cases you can have immediate dentures made which are placed the same day the teeth are removed – these are known as ‘immediate denture’. The advantage is you do not have to be without your teeth for any period of time! However, as your gums and bone heal after a tooth is lost there is some shrinkage, the immediate dentures may become loose and need replacing after 3 to 6 months.
If you are happy to wait longer for the denture to be made or if you have had missing teeth for a period of months then a set of permanent dentures would be more suitable. Your dentist can talk you through this in more detail.
Dentures can last many years if looked after well – your dentist will advise you on how best to care for them to ensure you keep them as long as possible.
