Many people desiring to have better-looking teeth have gained an interest in what porcelain veneers can do for their overall appearance. And now, getting porcelain veneers have become a favourite in the cosmetic dentistry industry because people are discovering that teeth that are brighter and even can boost your self-esteem.

The following are frequently asked questions that people have concerning porcelain veneers.

Q. What does it mean when you say porcelain veneers?

A. The porcelain veneers are designed from a thin layer of porcelain that is designed to bond onto and fit perfectly over your teeth. It reminds you of how well a fake nail fits onto your real fingernail. Depending on your preferences, the veneer will be tailor-made to the size and contours of your teeth to give you an even look. You can also specify the shade you would like your veneers to be.

Q. Are porcelain veneers a suitable option for anyone desiring them?

A. The shiny material that porcelain veneers are made of does solve a lot of cosmetic issues some people have with their smile. They have a natural look that is perfect for the teeth, and they can easily fix some dental issues that affect appearance (like gaps or chipped teeth). However, if you have more serious dental issues (like a habit of grinding your teeth or gum disease), then you may want to consult with your dentist to determine if veneers will be a good fit for you.

Q. How many years can I expect my porcelain veneers to last?

A. On average, you can expect your veneers to last between 10-15 years. Depending on the level of care, they may even last longer. Also, you can always get them replaced should they become damaged.

Q. What is the process involved in getting a porcelain veneer treatment?

A. First, your dentist will get a mould of your teeth and let you see what your mouth will look like after you get veneers. At this point, your preferences for contour, colour and any other factors involving how your veneers will fit and look should be discussed. A set of provisional veneers is then fitted, these will resemble the final veneers closely, but allow changes depending on what both you and your dentist feel. In most cases, veneers are fitted without the patient being able to test drive the proposed changes. Using a set of provisional veneers allows you to test function, phonetics and aesthetics. The final veneers are then modelled on the provisional veneers. Once your veneers are ready, you schedule an appointment to get them bonded to your teeth. With advancements in modern dental materials we are now able to place veneers with minimal preparation of the tooth surface and in some instances, we do need to prepare at all, this is of course our preference.

Q. What is the proper dental upkeep when you have porcelain veneers?

A. Do not crack nuts with your teeth because it could chip your veneers. They are sturdy but don’t do things to damage them like biting and crunching on ice (or other hard foods) or ripping a package open with your mouth. Keep your teeth clean as always. Don’t forget to maintain your brushing and flossing regimen to maintain proper oral hygiene. You also may want to use a soft electric toothbrush to keep your veneers shiny and polished.
