What is Biomimetic Dentistry?

Dentistry is a rapidly developing science; particularly the fields of adhesive dentistry and material sciences are at a point where we can now do complex and comprehensive dentistry without the need for destructive processes.

The Biomimetic approach involves an understanding of how nature has evolved the structure of healthy teeth to bear stress and function in day-to-day activities. With this understanding, we seek to replace what has been lost with materials that mimic the physical properties of natural tooth structure, therefore giving us the closest final result to a natural tooth that we can create. This helps restore the appearance and performance of your teeth, that has otherwise been compromised through tooth wear, decay or trauma.

Why is this important?

The Biomimetic approach to restorative Dentistry enables your Dentist to control the strength, function and aesthetics of the restorations placed in your mouth. An appreciation of the natural components of teeth, and the ability to bond directly to it with stronger, more aesthetic materials, enables us to break the destructive restorative cycle were teeth are constantly being restored every few years, eventually leading to root canal treatment and then tooth loss.

What does it involve?

Unlike traditional, more aggressive approaches to placing restorations, crowns and bridges – Biomimetics focusses instead on the preservation of the health and vitality of the natural tooth. With the ability to chemically bond white resin-based (composite) materials onto the tooth, we prevent the requirement to cut away and destroy natural tooth structure to create artificially retentive cavities.

A core component of Biomimetics is prevention and providing minimally invasive treatments to ensure your teeth last you as long as possible, whilst looking the best they can.

In taking a less destructive route to rebuilding and restoring the teeth, the fragile nerve within the tooth is protected as much as possible, therefore reducing the risk of the tooth needing root canal treatment. With modern adhesive technology enabling an additive approach to placing restorations, fillings can be far more gentle for both patient and tooth, making the process simpler and more reliable.

The Biomimetic approach at Post House Dental

Here at Post House Dental, we are proud to say the Biomimetic ethos is core in our approach to the delivery of patient-centered care. As one of the earlier practices to adopt this approach, we have invested heavily in cutting-edge dental technology, such as digital scanners, surgical microscopes and adhesive equipment, to ensure precision and predictable restorations that look and perform to the highest level. We have extensive experience in this area and our clinical team are highly trained and proficient in the use of adhesive dentistry. The Biomimetic approach is pertinent whether you are having a simple filling or complete mouth rehabilitation.
