A number of things can cause damage to teeth and when this damage becomes widespread, a prosthodontist is on hand to help. Trauma, age, disease and decay are the main causes of dental damage, though there are others. A prosthodontist specialist will assess the problem and create a treatment plan; this could include a number of different dental techniques and methods. A prosthodontist specialist’s overall goal is to restore the appearance and function of your teeth.

Popular Prosthodontist Treatments

There is a range of prosthodontist treatments available, which means a range of different results can be achieved. These include:

  • Dental Implants
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Porcelain Veneers
  • Corrective Treatment for Failed Dentistry
  • Aesthetic Dentistry
  • TMJ and Jaw Joint Problems
  • Restoration and Reconstruction Work
  • Multidisciplinary Specialist Care

How is the Ideal Smile Achieved?

A prosthodontist will use a range of different elements to ensure natural results are achieved and to make sure everything is in proportion, looking great and that you’re happy with the end result. These elements include:

  • The Horizontal Smile Line – This uses an imaginary horizontal line that connects your eyes and canine teeth. For the best prosthodontic results, these lines should be parallel.
  • Vertical Symmetry – This takes into account the line of symmetry in the middle of your smile, which highlights the differences in the size and shape of any front teeth. A difference would affect the symmetry of the smile.
  • Smile Line – This uses an imaginary line that connects the edges of your two top teeth. For the best results, the smile line should gently curve and follow the line of your lower lip.
  • Gum Line – By following your upper lip, it is possible to improve the frame to your teeth. A smile looks best when only a small pink triangle area of gum is visible between each individual tooth.
  • Embrasure – This uses the triangle spaces between the ends of the teeth to create an attractive smile. In practice, the spaces should be smallest between the front teeth and increase in size on others. Though squared embrasures look best on men, rounded embrasures look best on women.
  • Tooth Proportion – Unsurprisingly, tooth proportion is an important part of prosthodontics. The most aesthetically pleasing tooth height to width ratio is known to be 0.7:1, but this does need to be changed depending on individual requirements.
  • The Golden Triangle – When it comes to designing a new smile, The Golden Triangle is used as the starting point. It focuses on balance by highlighting how much of the tooth surface is visible when you smile; the ideal ratio is 1.6:1:0.6.
