White Fillings

Found in

Fillings are very common and most adults have at least one, some maybe more. It’s hard to avoid needing a filling, but there’s no need to settle for a filling that looks unsightly.

A white filling is far superior to a normal amalgam metal filling, it is also a lot less noticeable. It is created using enamel and dentin bonding techniques, which allows decayed and broken teeth to be fixed. White fillings can also be used to restore teeth that have been damaged through injury. White fillings are very popular because of the way they look, but also because they are a safer alternative to mercury-based metal fillings. The adhesive techniques used to place white fillings results in increased support for the remaining tooth structure, this is not the case with metal fillings.

How Are White Fillings Added to Teeth?

We start by isolating the tooth with a device called a rubber dam, this is important as it ensures excellent moisture control. The tooth is then examined under high power magnification, and any areas of decay or weakened tooth structure are carefully removed. The tooth surface undergoes a very specific cleaning protocol to ensure we achieve the optimum bond strength for the filling material. The tooth is then built in small increments to the correct natural morphology to ensure the correct form and function of the tooth. There is usually a small amount of refinement and polishing to do once the restoration is complete.

The Pros and Cons of White Fillings

The main disadvantage with white fillings is the technique needs to be very good in handling the material. Fortunately, all the dentists at Post House Dental follow the international best standards for these procedures and are all very experienced. The list of advantages includes, but not limited to:

  • Same colour as natural teeth.
  • Just as long lasting as metal fillings
  • Strengthen the remaining tooth structure
  • Free of mercury
  • Provide an excellent base for future restorations such as crowns and onlays
  • Similar properties to natural dentine and enamel
  • Chemically bonds to the remaining tooth structure
  • Easy to repair if it chips
