A toothache might seem like a small problem, but it can cause a lot of discomfort. Toothaches can also lead to other issues like headaches, sinus problems or jaw pain. Understanding the root cause of your toothache is the number one step to solving the issue.

This blog discusses about the best painkillers and home remedies for a toothache.

Reason for Toothache

Toothache might occur due to many reasons. The most common reason for toothache is tooth decay, gum disease, cracked tooth, or even an impacted tooth. In some cases, even a sinus infection or sensitive teeth can also cause severe tooth pain.

If the pain is unbearable, immediately consult your dentist before things get out of hand.

Painkillers for Toothache

The dentist decides what pain relief to use before or after the procedure to alleviate the pain. Here are some painkillers highly recommended by the dentist.

Aspirin

This medicine is among the most popular and commonly used painkillers. It decreases fever and functions in a way to combat inflammation. It also helps reduce clotting, so doctors recommend it to prevent heart attacks and strokes. This is why aspirin is not the best painkiller to be used if you damage teeth or if a tooth is removed. A few side effects could be stomach irritations, nausea or nausea.

Ibuprofen

Many people consider it the best available over the counter painkiller for dental discomfort. Additionally, Ibuprofen is often used along with paracetamol to relieve extreme pain and add anti-inflammatory. However, you shouldn’t take Ibuprofen if you are asthmatic. Be sure to check the label for additional warnings and contradictory information.

Paracetamol

Most doctors prescribe this painkiller to treat minor muscle aches, headaches, fevers, backaches, and toothaches. Instead of relieving inflammation, these painkillers block transmitting pain, stopping nerve signals from reaching the brain. However, the overuse of paracetamols could cause liver damage, particularly when used with other painkillers. Paracetamol is not recommended for those who suffer from serious liver diseases.

Home Remedies for Toothaches

A few home remedies to relieve tooth pain are:

Rinsing with saltwater

The swelling that creates painful pressure in a tooth is caused by bacteria entering the tooth through a hole or crack. So swelling will stop after the bacteria have been eliminated or killed.

Rinsing reduces levels of bacteria in the tooth. Frequent rinsing can ensure that a toothache does not get more severe. There are a variety of mild natural anti-septics like Clove oil. However, the most effective option is table salt.

Saltwater solution for toothache is the most simple natural anti-septic to make at home.

Ice packs to reduce swelling

Cooling the area of inflammation can decrease swelling because it reduces flow in the infected area. Ice is the most effective method to cool the area around the toothache.

Apply the ice on the skin for 10 minutes per hour if possible. Keep applying the ice until the swelling has subsided. This will prevent the swelling from returning.

Final Thoughts

We hope this blog has given some insights into managing a toothache with home remedies. However, if a severe toothache doesn’t subside even after prescribed painkillers, scheduling an appointment with an oral expert is best. In doing so, you will be certain about what measures to take for maintaining healthy oral hygiene.
